Before you come

Thessaloniki from Cyprus

Two hours from Larnaca, and from the moment you land there is no language to switch into.

Why it suits Cypriots

A Greek city break with no language in the way. You order in Greek, you ask directions in Greek, and the menu needs no decoding. The centre is flat as far as Egnatia and small enough to cross on foot, with Roman and Byzantine monuments standing between the shops. Thessaloniki keeps no island season and no island hours, so a February weekend works as well as an August one.

The flight and the way into town

Larnaca to Makedonia Airport takes about two hours in the air, and Paphos a shade less. Schedules move with the season, so check current routes with your airline. A taxi from the terminal reaches Ladadika in twenty to thirty minutes, while city buses run to the centre around the clock and cost far less. Since 27 August 2026 the X3 has connected Mikra metro station with the airport. One thing to watch. A bus ticket will not open a metro gate.

Breakfast, then the markets

Thessaloniki eats differently from Nicosia or Limassol, and the difference shows up at breakfast. Bougatsa comes hot off the tray, sweet or with mince, and Terkenlis sells the tsoureki the city argues about. Elenidis makes trigona. At midday the Kapani and Modiano markets sell fish and vegetables to people who are cooking that night, and the ouzeri between the stalls will feed you where you stand. In the evening Ladadika is at the door, from Cretan cooking at Charoupi to a beer at Zythos.

Two days, or three

Morning on Aristotelous, then uphill to the Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda. Midday in the markets. The seafront carries you as far as the Umbrellas in the afternoon, and the evening happens in Ladadika, two minutes from our door. A third day belongs to Ano Poli, where the walls and the Eptapyrgio take a whole afternoon and the climb is real.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the flight from Cyprus?

About two hours from Larnaca (LCA) or Paphos (PFO). The distance is over 1,000 km. Check current schedules with your airline.

How do I get from the airport to Ladadika?

A taxi is quickest, twenty to thirty minutes depending on traffic. City buses link the airport with the centre around the clock and cost far less. The X3 has run from Mikra metro station to the airport since 27 August 2026, at the special-line fare. Tell us your landing time. Photo directions for the entrance come back before you fly.

Do I need a car in Thessaloniki?

Not for the city. The centre is walkable end to end, and from Ladadika most of the sights are close. A car is only worth it for a trip out of town, to Vergina or Halkidiki.

Is Greek spoken everywhere?

Yes. It is a Greek city and the Cypriot accent is entirely familiar. Hotels and restaurants in the centre also work in English.
