Hagia Sophia

A church standing since the seventh century, with mosaics that have survived a mosque, a fire and an earthquake.

A seventh-century church in Thessaloniki, a UNESCO monument, with the Ascension in its dome. What to look for, how far on foot, and what to know before you go.

What it is

Hagia Sophia is dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God, like its namesake in Constantinople. It stands on the remains of an early Christian basilica. The archaeology places it in the seventh century, while the oldest written record of it dates from the late eighth — a hundred years in which the building existed and nobody wrote it down. It is one of the fifteen Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.

What to look for

Two mosaics hold the eye. The dome carries the Ascension, Christ in glory with the apostles and the Virgin below. In the apse the Virgin sits enthroned. This church served as a mosque from the sixteenth century and returned to Christian worship in 1912. The mosaics came through all of it and are still there. People pray here, so visit with the courtesy you would show at any service.
