Aristotelous Square and its arcades: the city's grand opening to the sea, the historic cafés, Tsimiski for shopping. A few minutes on foot from the suite.

How it came to exist

In August 1917 a fire burned most of central Thessaloniki and left tens of thousands of people without homes. The government refused to let the city be rebuilt as it had been. It handed the replanning to a commission led by the French architect and planner Ernest Hébrard, and his plan gave the city the axis we now call Aristotelous: a monumental avenue running from Egnatia straight down to the water, opening into a square on the Thermaic Gulf.

Our street carries his name

Our address is 13 Ernestou Emprar. It is the same Hébrard: the Ladadika street our building stands on is named for the man who designed the square your walk ends in. That is not only a coincidence of geography. Both places belong to the same plan for how the city would be reborn after the fire.

What you see today

Hébrard's plan was only partly carried out. Most of the buildings framing the square went up in the 1950s and 1960s, though they followed the arcaded elevations he had specified, and that is where the sense of unity comes from. The arcades run down both sides, cafés put tables out beneath them, and your eye is pulled toward the sea because it was designed to be. On the western side stands the Olympion, the 1950 cinema that hosts the Thessaloniki International Film Festival each November.

When to go

Early in the morning the square is close to empty and you can see the architecture. Late in the afternoon it fills up and you can see the point of it. If you can, go at sunset: the axis faces west toward the gulf, so the sun drops directly beneath the arcades. At Christmas the city tree goes up here, and on New Year's Eve this is where people gather.

Tsimiski and the arcades

Tsimiski, the centre's shopping spine, runs behind the square, and around it lies the network of arcades: covered passages cut through the blocks, lined with small shops, coffee bars and bookshops. It is the pleasantest way to cross the centre when it rains or when the sun is hard.
