Why Thessaloniki is the natural first stop from Bulgaria

Thessaloniki is the nearest large Greek city to Bulgaria: from Sofia, the A25 motorway (part of the E79) brings you to the centre in about four and a half hours via the Kulata-Promachonas border crossing, stops included. The city is flat, compact and walkable, and Roman arches, UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches, covered markets and Greece's most acclaimed food scene all sit within a 15-minute radius. There is no flight to book, no transfer to arrange, and two or three days here fill without effort.

The drive and the border

The main route from Sofia is via the Kulata-Promachonas crossing, down the A25 (E79). Peak times at the border are late Friday and Sunday evening from June to August. Start early in the morning or after the evening rush to avoid delays. Once in Thessaloniki, park once at the 24/7 partner garage 250 m from our entrance and leave the car there for the rest of your stay. From that point the Aristotelous axis, the Kapani and Modiano markets, the seafront, and Ladadika are all on foot. The accommodation-with-parking guide has the practical details.

Before you set off

One thing needs settling in advance, and it is the car. Ladadika's lanes are partly pedestrianised and a street space is not something to plan around, so set the navigation to the partner garage and not to our address. It is 250 metres from the entrance, open around the clock, charged separately. Message us on WhatsApp with the hour you expect to arrive and we send the garage location and the entrance photographs together. Self check-in from 15:00.

The best of Thessaloniki and your base in Ladadika

A two- or three-day weekend in Thessaloniki fills without rushing: the White Tower, the Arch of Galerius, the Rotunda, and the Byzantine basilica of Agios Dimitrios are all UNESCO-listed monuments within easy walking distance of each other. The Kapani market, the oldest open-air market still operating in Greece, is the place to start a morning: spices, olives, fresh cheese, and the rhythm of a working bazaar. For dinner, Ladadika is two minutes from Loena. Tavernas, meze houses and bars fill restored warehouse buildings.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Sofia to Thessaloniki?

Under normal conditions, roughly three hours. The Kulata-Promachonas border crossing can add up to 30 minutes on peak summer Friday evenings and Sunday nights. Setting off early in the morning avoids the worst of it.

Do Bulgarian visitors need a visa to enter Greece?

As EU citizens, Bulgarians enter Greece with a national ID card or passport. For anyone driving, the date that matters is 1 January 2025, when land border controls with Bulgaria were lifted and Kulata-Promachonas stopped checking documents as a matter of routine. The Council of the EU decided that on 12 December 2024. Air and sea borders had opened earlier, on 31 March 2024. Keep your document to hand even so, because spot checks still happen.

Where do I park when driving from Bulgaria to Thessaloniki?

Loena works with a 24/7 partner garage a few steps from the suite. Leave the car there on arrival and you will not need it again during your stay. The entire city centre is walkable from Ladadika.
