Six monasteries on the rocks, each shut on a different day of the week. Which day, what you are allowed to wear, and how to get there before you set off.
In western Thessaly, above the town of Kalambaka, sandstone pillars rise more than 400 metres from the plain. Monks began settling on them in the 11th century. By the end of the 15th there were twenty-four monasteries up there, and six are still working and open to visitors. UNESCO put Meteora on the World Heritage List in 1988 under five criteria, one of which covers the landscape itself. The 16th-century frescoes inside are the reason art historians come. Theophanes the Cretan painted St Nicholas Anapafsas in 1527.
Which day each monastery closes
The summer timetable runs from 1 April to 31 October, with small differences between monasteries. Days are from the Holy Metropolis of Stagoi and Meteora. Each house sets its own and posts extra closures too, so check the day before you drive.

Driving there
The car is the simplest answer. Take Egnatia Odos west to its junction with the E65 at Kipourio, near Grevena, then follow the E65 south to the Kalambaka exit. The last forty-six kilometres of that motorway opened to traffic in July 2026, so the whole run is motorway now. Up on the rocks a road climbs from one monastery to the next, so the car is useful once you arrive as well. If you hire one for the day, the partner garage 250 metres from our entrance is open around the clock and charged separately.
Without a car the day gets tight. The train involves a change at Paleofarsalos, and Hellenic Train currently runs the Paleofarsalos-Kalambaka leg with replacement buses. Its published timetable shows two services a day each way, into Kalambaka at 12:30 and 23:15, out at 05:45 and 16:50. On the KTEL coaches you travel first to Trikala and then on a frequent local bus to Kalambaka. The earliest departure from Thessaloniki on the summer timetable is 9:30. Both operators state in print that services change, so check yours the evening before.
The dress code, and who gets turned away
These are working monasteries and the rule is enforced at the gate. The Great Meteoron publishes the rule. Men in shorts or sleeveless tops are refused entry, and so are women in trousers or sleeveless tops. So women want a skirt that covers the knee and men want long trousers, with shoulders covered on both counts. Bring that in the bag before you leave the suite.
One day, or a night in Kalambaka
With a car and a start before dawn, Meteora works as a day trip at the pace of two or three monasteries out of the six. Without a car it does not work. The train sets you down in Kalambaka at 12:30 and asks for you back at 16:50, which is four hours on the rock. Anyone who wants the pillars at first light, or at sunset when the coaches have gone, should book a night in Kalambaka. For the rest of your week the shorter runs out of Thessaloniki ask a lot less of you.
Each one closes on a different day. Great Meteoron shuts on Tuesdays, Varlaam and St Nicholas Anapafsas on Fridays, Roussanou on Wednesdays, Holy Trinity on Thursdays and St Stephen on Mondays. The winter timetable closes more days at Great Meteoron and Varlaam. Pick the monasteries you care about, then pick the day.
What is the dress code at the Meteora monasteries?
Knees and shoulders covered, and the rule is checked at the gate. The Great Meteoron refuses men in shorts or sleeveless tops, and women in trousers or sleeveless tops, so women need a skirt below the knee. Bring what you need with you before you set off.
Can you do Meteora in a day from Thessaloniki?
By car, yes. Leave early and settle for two or three monasteries. The whole run is motorway since the last stretch of the E65 opened in July 2026. By train it is harder, because the connection through Paleofarsalos puts you in Kalambaka at 12:30 and takes you out at 16:50. A night in Kalambaka turns a long drive into an easy morning on the rocks.
