Hotel or serviced apartment in Thessaloniki? An honest comparison of space, kitchen, check-in, and services. How to choose the right one for your stay.
First, what is a serviced apartment?
You have settled on Thessaloniki and roughly know where you want to be. Now the real question: a hotel or a serviced apartment? The two overlap more than they used to, and the right answer depends on how long you are staying, who you are travelling with, and how you like to spend your mornings. A serviced apartment is a self-contained flat with a bedroom, living space, and a real kitchen, run with hospitality layered on top: regular housekeeping, fast Wi-Fi, fresh linen, and a managed check-in. It is not a bare Airbnb with a key in a lockbox and no one to call, and it is not a hotel room either; it sits deliberately in between.
Space is the clearest difference
A hotel gives you a well-kept room; a serviced apartment gives you a separate living area, a dining table, and somewhere to put your things. For two or three nights you may not notice. For a slower break, the extra room changes the whole trip. You get breakfast at a real table, and an afternoon hour that does not happen on the edge of a bed. Our own suites are 30 m² with a queen bed plus an extra single, so they sleep up to three. The honest counterpoint: if you are out from morning to midnight and only need somewhere to sleep, a well-located hotel room is enough, and choosing one is not a mistake.
The kitchen, and what it quietly changes
A kitchen sounds minor until you have it. You make morning coffee your way, because each Loena suite has a Nespresso machine. The fridge holds finds from the Modiano and Kapani markets eight minutes away, and you can cook a simple dinner when you do not feel like going out again. It takes the pressure off restaurant hours and quietly lowers the cost of a longer stay; hotels rarely offer more than a kettle. Each suite also has a washing machine and iron, which matters more than it sounds past day four. What a kitchen does not replace: room service at midnight and a cooked breakfast that simply appears. A hotel bundles those. We do not serve breakfast in the suite, though there is a rate that covers breakfast at Napoleon on Fragon Street, which you walk over and collect yourself.
Check-in and services: where hotels genuinely win
A staffed front desk around the clock is genuinely useful at 2 a.m., and a full hotel folds daily housekeeping, a restaurant, and a concierge into the rate. Be honest with yourself about how much of that you actually use. At Loena, self check-in runs from 15:00 with photo directions sent before you arrive, and checkout is at 11:00. The entrance is discreet and the lift is small, so the directions matter. Anything you would ask a front desk, we answer on WhatsApp. Housekeeping is regular rather than daily, and transfers can be arranged on request, as an extra. Whichever you book, confirm how arrival works before you travel.
Which should you choose?
Both can be central. In Thessaloniki the best of each sit in or beside Ladadika, within a short walk of Aristotelous Square, so location is rarely the deciding factor. Choose a hotel for one or two nights, a 24-hour desk, and full daily service. Choose a serviced apartment for three nights or more, for a couple, family, or small group, and for a kitchen and living space with hospitality comfort kept. In a food city like Thessaloniki, letting the streets be your restaurant and bar is rather the point. One honest note that applies to both in this quarter: Ladadika is lively on weekend nights and you will hear it. We never promise quiet. Light sleepers can ask before arrival for the quietest suite available at the time.
The middle path: Loena Luxury Suites
Loena is built around exactly this balance: five identical 30 m² suites on the fourth floor of 13 Ernestou Emprar, in Ladadika. Tavernas are two minutes away, Tsimiski three, the port and the Modiano market eight, the White Tower a 23-minute walk along the water. Full kitchen, fast Wi-Fi, smart TV, A/C, and a 24/7 partner garage 250 m away for drivers, as an extra. Guests score the stay 9.4 on Booking.com across 490 reviews and 4.9 on Google, with cleanliness at 9.8, and "exactly like the photos" is the line we work to keep true. Is a serviced apartment better than a hotel in Thessaloniki?
For stays of three nights or more, and for couples, families, or small groups, usually yes: you get a kitchen, more space, and flexible self check-in with hotel-level comfort. For a single night, or if you want a 24-hour front desk and full daily service, a hotel can be the simpler choice.
What is the difference between a serviced apartment and an Airbnb?
A serviced apartment adds hospitality on top of the flat: regular housekeeping, fresh linen, a managed check-in, and a team you can actually reach. At Loena, that means WhatsApp answers from the people who run the suites. Many Airbnbs are simply private flats with little or no support once you have the key.
Do serviced apartments have daily housekeeping?
Typically housekeeping is regular rather than daily. Fresh linen and the essentials are kept up through the stay, not full hotel-style daily service. At Loena, housekeeping is regular, and transfers can be added on request, as an extra.
