Rooftop bars with a view over the Thermaic Gulf, an evening walk along the Nea Paralia, and the beaches of Halkidiki an hour away. Thessaloniki in summer works as your coastal base.
Through June, July, and August, Thessaloniki does not hollow out the way a typical beach resort would. It stays a working, living city. Temperatures climb, but the breeze off the Thermaic Gulf makes evenings genuinely pleasant. The Nea Paralia, the 3.5 km promenade from the White Tower to the Zongolopoulos Umbrellas, fills with evening walkers, and the outdoor tables in Ladadika and along the seafront stay open late.
Rooftops, beaches and the city after dark
Summer is rooftop season in Thessaloniki. Skyline at the OTE Tower is worth an evening. It has the only revolving floor in Greece, with a view over the gulf and, on a clear day, Mount Olympus. Closer to home, Matute is the easiest first drink, a retro terrace two minutes from the door on Plateia Emporiou. For beaches, the first coves of Kassandra in Halkidiki sit roughly an hour's drive away. The quieter inlets of Sithonia are another thirty minutes on. The day-trips guide and the nightlife guide cover the full options.
July and August commonly sit at 30 to 34°C, higher in a heatwave, with warm humid nights and very little rain. The sea breeze takes the edge off along the front, so keep the promenade and the open Roman sites for the cooler morning or the long golden evening, and give the midday hours to the markets, the museums or a shaded café. Pack light clothing and a hat, with sunscreen and water on you. After a day in that heat, air conditioning back at the suite changes the trip.
Your summer base
With air conditioning, a full kitchen, and the whole city outside the door, Loena in Ladadika works as a departure point: leave for the beach in the morning, return for dinner in the quarter. Summer demand is high. Book ahead.
