Discover Thessaloniki
The port, Roman and Byzantine monuments, markets, and Greece's liveliest food scene — all on foot.
By Christos Petkakis. Updated June 2026.
Greece's second city, at human scale
Thessaloniki packs 2,300 years of history into a compact, flat strip beside the Thermaic Gulf. Roman arches, UNESCO-listed early-Christian churches, Byzantine walls, and neoclassical mansions stand next to meze houses, covered markets, and bars that close at dawn. Best of all, almost everything is on foot. Based in Ladadika, in the heart of the old centre, the city opens up in front of you — no car required.
The city's neighbourhoods

Ladadika
The old oil-merchants' quarter, today the liveliest dining core: tavernas, meze houses, and bars in restored warehouses. It is also your base.

Aristotelous Square
The city's drawing room: Ernest Hébrard's monumental square opens from the seafront toward the upper centre, with arcades, cafés, and a view over the gulf.

Ano Poli (Upper Town)
The only quarter spared by the 1917 fire — cobbled lanes, Byzantine walls, the Heptapyrgion fortress, and the finest sunset view in the city.

Nea Paralia
The ~3.5 km promenade from the White Tower to Zongolopoulos's Umbrellas — the calmest walk in the city, made for the late afternoon.

Modiano & Kapani markets
The restored Modiano arcade as a food hall and the older open-air Kapani bazaar — the city's culinary heart, eight minutes from our door.

Roman & Byzantine city
The Kamara (Arch of Galerius), the Rotunda, and the Roman Forum, alongside fifteen UNESCO monuments — the city's history within a few minutes' walk.
