Why Thessaloniki is the natural first stop from Bulgaria

Thessaloniki is the nearest large Greek city to Bulgaria: from Sofia, the E-79 / A2 motorway brings you to the centre in roughly three hours via the Kulata–Promachonas border crossing. The city is flat, compact, and walkable — Roman arches, UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches, covered markets, and Greece's most acclaimed food scene, all within a 15-minute radius. There is no flight to book, no transfer to arrange, and two or three days here fill without effort.

Getting here — the drive and the border

The main route from Sofia is via the Kulata–Promachonas crossing on the E-79 motorway. Peak times at the border are late Friday and Sunday evening in June–August — start early in the morning or after the evening rush to avoid delays. The best of Thessaloniki — and your base in Ladadika

A two- or three-day weekend in Thessaloniki fills without rushing: the White Tower, the Arch of Galerius, the Rotunda, and the Byzantine basilica of Agios Dimitrios are all UNESCO-listed monuments within easy walking distance of each other. The Kapani market — the oldest open-air market still operating in Greece — is the place to start a morning: spices, olives, fresh cheese, and the rhythm of a working bazaar. For dinner, Ladadika is two minutes from Loena — tavernas, meze houses, and bars in restored warehouse buildings.
